Vestrahorn

Vestrahorn is a coastal mountain near Höfn in southeastern Iceland, rising above the Stokksnes peninsula. Dark beaches, rocky shores and the neighbouring outcrop of Brunnhorn frame a landscape with both geological and military history.

About Vestrahorn

Rock formed beneath the surface

The mountain is composed mainly of gabbro, with some granophyre. These rocks belong to an intrusive complex, formed as magma crystallised underground. Geological research on the Vesturhorn intrusion has described layered gabbro with changes in crystal grain size. Such structures preserve evidence of processes within a magma body, providing a different perspective from the surface lava flows common in Icelandic landscapes.

Settlement and coastal defence

The area is associated with Horn, one of Iceland's early settlement farms. During the Second World War, British forces used the area as a military base. A NATO radar station was subsequently built at Stokksnes, adding a modern strategic role to this exposed stretch of the southeastern coast.

The modern Viking village

The wooden village at the mountain's foot is a film set built in 2009, rather than surviving settlement-age buildings. Its original film project was never completed. The site's owners report that the set later appeared in filming for The Witcher: Blood Origin in 2021.
