Choose a walk, not just a viewpoint

Landmannalaugar offers routes with very different commitments. The Iceland Touring Association describes a 4.8 km Laugahraun lava-field circuit, with longer or steeper options toward Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnúkur. Pick a route that suits your experience and the conditions; a summit walk is not interchangeable with a short visit near the hut.

Getting into the Highlands

Access needs more planning than a lowland sightseeing stop. The mountain-road approaches require a suitable 4×4, and routes differ in their river crossings. Mountain buses offer an alternative when operating. Check current road conditions, transport timetables and any parking-reservation requirements for your date; do not assume a route is open simply because it appears on a map.
