About Geysir Geothermal Area

More than one geyser

Geysir is both the name of a particular hot spring and the name commonly used for the wider geothermal area. Its neighbours include Strokkur and many other springs and pools. The word geyser in other languages comes from Geysir itself. Look beyond the eruptions: mineral deposits and the surrounding geothermal features are part of what makes this place distinctive.

A protected living landscape

The area became a protected natural monument in 2020. That protection covers more than the famous springs: geological formations, microorganisms and unusual vegetation all matter here. Follow the marked visitor routes and barriers; this is a geothermal site to observe, not a bathing area.
