About Skogafoss waterfall
Landscape and wildlife
About 25 metres wide, the waterfall occupies an old sea cliff rather than the present shoreline. Fulmars nest on the cliffs beside it. The river continues through a sequence of waterfalls upstream, placing Skógafoss at the lower end of a much longer river landscape.
Treasure in local folklore
A local legend associates the falls with the settler Þrasi, who supposedly concealed a chest of gold beneath the water. In the story, men trying to retrieve it pulled off a ring while the chest remained behind. This is folklore rather than a documented discovery of treasure.
Conservation
Paths and fenced vegetation areas help concentrate foot traffic and restore damaged ground around the waterfall and on Skógaheiði. Keeping to the established paths protects both recovering vegetation and the cliff habitat.
