Merchants and public institutions
Árni Thorlacius took charge of the family's commercial interests in 1827, combining trade and fishing with farming at Grunnasundsnes. The town's institutional role expanded when the Danish government decided in 1850 to locate officials for the southern part of the Western District here. Merchants were joined by administrators, a doctor and a pharmacist. The regional library, founded in 1847, formed part of the same growth in education and civic life.
A Norwegian house and a weather record
Thorlacius commissioned Norska húsið in 1832 using prepared timber from Norway. It is regarded as Iceland's first two-storey residential building and now interprets nineteenth-century household life. He also began regular weather observations in 1845, establishing the country's longest continuous series. The house and observations reveal how one merchant household contributed both to the townscape and to a lasting scientific record.
