About Djupivogur

Trading buildings and local collections

Commercial activity at Djúpivogur dates to 1589. Langabúð, built in 1790, is the town's oldest house and preserves the scale of its earlier trading settlement. The building now serves as a cultural centre. Its collections include sculpture and other work by Ríkarður Jónsson, a memorial collection associated with politician Eysteinn Jónsson and Sólveig Eyjólfsdóttir, and local historical material upstairs. A former commercial building thus houses several different records of the community's cultural and political life.

Bird habitats and public art

The surrounding coastline includes lagoons, lakes and mudflats that support a varied birdlife, while the offshore island of Papey provides nesting habitat for seabirds. This abundance is reflected in Eggin í Gleðivík, Sigurður Guðmundsson's installation of 34 oversized stone eggs by the harbour. Djúpivogur also belongs to the Cittaslow network, whose local approach emphasises regional food, craft, cultural identity and care for the environment.
