Overview

About Njals saga

A later work about an earlier society

Also called Brennu-Njáls saga or Njála, the work belongs to the Sagas of Icelanders. It was composed toward the end of the thirteenth century, while its action takes place in the tenth and early eleventh centuries. That gap is essential to interpretation. The saga offers a carefully constructed literary world shaped by later concerns; its dialogue and individual episodes should not be treated as a contemporary record of the events described.

Friendship under pressure

Gunnar and Njáll try to maintain their friendship while violence spreads among their households. In one episode, Gunnar offers compensation for a killing, yet the settlement fails to end the wider hostility. Such scenes place negotiated law beside personal loyalty and revenge. The burning of Njáll gives the saga its longer title. Its manuscript transmission and later copying also reveal how readers continued to reinterpret the story across centuries.
