About Kirkjufell
A shape carved by ice
The distinctive outline reflects erosion during the ice ages. Kirkjufell stood between glaciers that shaped its sides as they moved through the surrounding landscape. Bands exposed on the mountain preserve a layered geological structure beneath the steep slopes. The combination of those visible layers and an isolated-looking profile makes the mountain a useful example of how glaciation can reshape older rock into a striking landform.
Names and representations
Its names record different ways of interpreting the silhouette. Danish visitors called it Sukkertoppen, or Sugarloaf, while an older Icelandic name was Firðafjall. More recently it appeared as the Arrowhead Mountain in Game of Thrones. Photographs often place Kirkjufellsfoss in the foreground, linking two separate features in a familiar view. The mountain's steep rock faces remain an essential part of its character beyond that widely reproduced composition.
